Christmas Rubbish and Recylcing For Wokingham This Festive Period
Christmas Rubbish and Recylcing
In the run up to the festive season, Wokingham Borough Council is reminding residents to look out for their copy of the winter edition of Wokingham Borough News, which is being delivered to households across the Borough, for more information about Christmas waste and recycling collections.
During Christmas and New Year, residents will experience up to a two day delay on collections before normal service resumes on Monday 14 January. Collections will also begin earlier than normal, and residents are therefore asked to leave their rubbish out the night before a collection. More information can be found on the back page of the magazine.
There are a number of steps that residents can take to minimise waste going to landfill at a time when we traditionally throw more away:
- Avoid metallic or plastic-based wrapping paper as these cannot be put in black recycling boxes
- Buy fruit and vegetables loose, not pre-packed
- Write a shopping list and stick to it
- Compost vegetable/fruit peelings
- Turn vegetable leftovers from Christmas lunch into ‘bubble and squeak’
- Recycle plastic bottles, paper/card, aerosols and food/drink tins
- Break down cardboard boxes to save space and ensure they fit in the black recycling box
- Old, unwanted electrical items can be recycled at re3 recycling centres
- Chop up your real Christmas tree and take it to a household recycling centre
Recycling Centres
re3 recycling centres at Smallmead, Island Road, Reading, and Longshot Lane, Bracknell are open during the holiday period apart from Tuesday 25 December, Wednesday 26 December and Tuesday 1 January. On Monday 24 December recycling centres will be open from 8am until 4pm.
Cllr Norman Jorgensen, executive member for environment, sports, environmental health, leisure and libraries, said: “Inevitably, most of us produce more waste over the Christmas period. However, I hope that by following some of these easy tips we can minimise how much goes to landfill.”
“Our re3 recycling centres can take old or unwanted items as well as real Christmas trees. Participants in our garden waste scheme can also chop up their real Christmas trees for collection.”
Collection Date Changes
Residents can also find out their Christmas collection dates on the website www.wokingham.gov.uk (search for “collection days”).
