People who live or work in Wokingham and the surrounding areas are being encouraged to get on their bikes for Cycle September and enjoy the health, wellness and sustainability benefits of cycling.

Cycle September is an annual campaign that takes place from 1st to 30th September. It has one simple mission: to help people discover (or rediscover) the joys and benefits of riding a bike. It is free to enter and open to riders of every level – from complete beginners to Lycra-clad weekend warriors – who live or work in Wokingham and the surrounding areas. Everyone who participates in Cycle September will also be entered into a nationwide competition to win a £4,000 holiday, a Brompton folding e-bike, and other prizes, including cash rewards for encouraging others to get out and ride their bikes.

The campaign is organised by Love to Ride, an online cycling platform and app that encourages people to get on their bikes, in partnership with My Journey, Wokingham Borough Council’s active travel campaign. When people join the Love to Ride platform, they can log their rides, connect with other riders in their local area, and meet their health, wellness, and sustainability goals.

In 2022, more than 360 people participated in Cycle September in the Wokingham area, of whom almost one-fifth (16 per cent) were completely new to cycling. They logged more than 46,200 miles, made 1,814 trips that would have otherwise been taken via another form of transport, and saved 2,800 kgs of CO2

Katie Brown, spokesperson for Love to Ride in Wokingham, said, “We’d love to see if those in and around Wokingham can get to 50,000 miles this year. Cycle September is a great opportunity to get on a bike, feel the benefits, and potentially win a prize in the process. It’s also a great opportunity to get involved with and celebrate World Car Free Day on 22nd September, when people are encouraged to ditch their cars. We’d love to see more people making their journeys by bike instead.”

Statistics from My Journey show that Wokingham residents who have chosen to cycle more feel healthier, happier and fitter as a result. For residents, employees and visitors who also reduce their car use, this has the added benefit of saving money, reducing congestion, improving local air quality and contributing to Wokingham Borough being carbon neutral by 2030.

Cycle September is open to individuals, groups and businesses. Co-workers can join their workplace profile on Love to Ride and compete to earn the most points and top the local leaderboard in their size category.

Cycle September is also offering some exceptional prizes as part of its national competition. People registering before 31 August will be in with a chance of winning a Brompton Electric C Line Explore. It’s the most compact folding e-bike on the market, boasting a range of 44 miles and speeds of up to 15 mph.

Everyone who rides their bike in September will be entered into the draw to win a £4,000 holiday of their choice, with the winner announced on 4th October. There are also additional prizes to be won, including bike lights, bike locks and Love to Ride merchandise. Cycle September is also all about encouraging others to take part, so there’s a chance to win a cash prize based on the number of people you encourage.
