London Road Cycleway Project Complete
Construction of a cycleway along London Road in Wokingham is now complete. The finishing touches have been put to the project with the main road resurfaced and line painting for the cycleway carried out.
A329m Into Town
The new off-road cycleway will provide a link for cyclists from the Coppid Beech/A329M roundabout into the town centre. Work to install it began earlier this summer, with footways widened to allow enough space for the cycleway and pedestrians. The last few weeks saw overnight road closures to allow resurfacing to take place.
“This project has not only provided a fantastic new cycleway through our borough to a main town centre but also allowed us to carry out resurfacing on this key transport route,” said Cllr Pauline Jorgensen, executive member for highways and transport. “Providing the right cycling infrastructure for the borough means we’re providing residents with the facilities they need to keep fit and healthy, as well as accessing the amenities they need nearby without getting in their cars.
“We thank residents for their patience while we carried out these works and I hope to see many of them enjoying the benefits of it in the months and years ahead.”
As well as providing an easy route into Wokingham by bike, the project has other green elements. Recycled plastic kerbstones have been installed along some sections of the road, as the council continues to work towards making Wokingham Borough carbon neutral by 2030.
London Road Cycleway – Route 422
Completion of work on London Road means the council has completed its parts of the National Cycle Route 422. This links Newbury, Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell and Ascot on one seamless route through Berkshire.

Work on the A329 through Wokingham Borough, linking the Reading Borough boundary in Earley to the Bracknell Forest Boundary in Wokingham, began in 2014. Phases were completed in Earley, Winnersh and surrounding Wokingham Station in recent years with London Road marking the final stage in Wokingham borough.
The council continues to invest in cycling infrastructure, with more than £6million being spent across the borough on improvements since 2014.
“A cycleway like this, intersecting our borough and linking it to other areas, means cyclists can use it to link with areas beyond Wokingham borough as well as within it,” Cllr Jorgensen added.
