Teen Reading Challenge

Decrease Font Size Increase Font Size Text Size Print This Page

This summer, Wokingham Borough Libraries are inviting local teenagers to rise to the Teen Reading Challenge.  Whether you’re an avid bookworm or simply enjoy reading for pleasure, the Teen Reading Challenge is a fantastic way to browse books all summer long, and there’s a wide variety of literature to choose from.

Teen Reading Challenge

In order to complete the challenge, teenagers simply need to head to their nearest Wokingham Borough Library where they can collect a challenge card. Each time they pick up a book from one of the six genres included, they will receive a stamp in their challenge card. Any young person who completes the challenge will be entered into a prize draw for a young adult book filled goody bag. The challenge runs from 1 July until 1 September. To get involved entrants will require a Wokingham Borough Library card. For those without an existing library card they are invited to sign-up at their local library.

Poetry & Short Story Competition

For young people who would like to flex their writing muscles there is also a Poetry and Short Story Competition. Teens are invited to write a poem or short story of less than 500 words on the theme of Space. Simply complete an entry form and hand into your local library along with your admission. The deadline to enter is Saturday 19 September. There are amazing book-themed prizes up for grabs this year.

“There’s nothing quite like getting lost in a book. It expands your imagination, opens up new worlds to you and helps you create new ideas in reality.” said Cllr Parry Batth, executive member for environment and leisure. “There are plenty of amazing books to choose from at our libraries and Wokingham Borough Library staff are always happy to recommend new books. There is even a list of new teenage books on the Wokingham Borough libraries blog, so I’d encourage everyone who can to take part“

In addition to the challenges and competitions on offer, Wokingham Library will also host a series of events for teens.

For aspiring writers and those who wish to develop their storytelling capabilities, they can join workshops run by Igniting Writing. The action packed writing workshops are designed for anyone between 11-18 years of age.

Teen Writing Workshops – Fanfiction Addiction with Igniting Writing

Everyone has a series they love getting sucked into, whether it’s a book, a TV show, a movie, or something else entirely. If you’ve ever wanted to explore Hogwarts, or write about Sherlock Holmes in a whole new series of adventures, this workshop is your chance to give it a go and discover an amazing range of stories you can tell with characters and settings you know and love.

Saturday 27 July, from 10.30am to 3pm

Teen Writing Workshops – Once Upon a Fairy Tale with Igniting Writing

Classic fairy tales, like Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella, have been retold countless times. But what is it about those stories that make fairy tales so timeless? And how can they be reimagined and written in the modern day? This workshop will focus on the core elements of fairy tale stories, from characters to settings, and give you the chance to create your own fictional fables.

Saturday 3 August, from 10.30am to 3pm

All these workshop sessions will include fun writing exercises, group discussions and some useful tips and tricks to sharpen your writing skills. There will be a lunch break, so make sure you bring something with you.  £5 charge, per session.  Places must be booked by calling Wokingham Library on 0118 978 1368.
