Too Good To Go (TGTG) – Wokingham Borough Council Partnership Announced To Reduce Food Waste
Wokingham Borough Council has entered into a partnership with Too Good To Go (TGTG) to reduce food waste in the borough. At present, 110 cafes, coffee shops, supermarkets, bakeries and the like across the borough have joined the TGTG app to offer delicious, unsold food to residents for just a fraction of the original price.

Surplus Food
Through the app, shops and restaurants are able to sell their surplus food items, instead of throwing them away and having them incinerated or sent to landfill, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.
Free App
The free app is user-friendly to both businesses and consumers. Shops put unsold food items into ‘magic bags’ and list them on the app for around a third of the original retail price. Users of the app can search for magic bags offered by nearby businesses and purchase them through the app. They can then go and pick them up at a set time.
Cllr Ian Shenton, the executive member for environment, sport and leisure, said: “Food waste is a global environmental issue that requires our urgent attention. We are thankful to businesses who have joined the Too Good To Go app for helping reduce the borough’s carbon footprint. I hope to see more businesses on board and make a difference to the environment.”

The app is bringing a positive environmental impact to the borough. From the businesses that have already joined the app in the borough, over 46,000 magic bags that might have gone into the bin have been saved, equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions from 1,310 flights from London to Berlin.
Sophie Trueman, managing director of Too Good To Go UK and Ireland, said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Wokingham Borough Council to help even more hospitality and food businesses in the local area fight food waste. Not only does reducing food waste make good business sense, but it also carries huge benefits for our planet. I can’t wait to see the impact we can make together through this fantastic collaboration.”
The council is working together with Too Good To Go to reach out to businesses in the borough, hoping to get more food businesses to sign up so that residents can have an even wider choice of magic bags to choose from.
Too Good To Go Partnership
As part of the partnership, TGTG will waive its administration fees for the first six month on the platform, if businesses in the borough sign up through the dedicated webpage (https://app.tgtg.to/wokingham) by 31 December 2022.
Companies may contact the council’s business engagement team by emailing economicdevelopment@wokingham.gov.uk or the Too Good To Go team by emailing hdodd@toogoodtogo.co.uk for more information.
The TGTG app can be downloaded for free from the App Store (for Apple devices) and the Google Play Store (for Android devices).
