Start Your Own Business

Have you ever wanted to start your own business? It could soon be a reality as Wokingham Borough Council launches its business start-up course, to help local residents set up their own business.

In partnership with housing associations and Scape Reinvest, the borough council is offering a free ten -week training course to help local people start up their own business.

The sessions will provide practical help and guidance to support individuals in setting up a business plan, as well as offering assistance with areas such as marketing, managing risk and the financial aspects of starting a business. There will also be the opportunity to take part in a Dragons Den style event which will take place at the end of the programme.

The programme is offered in partnership with Enterprise Cube, an enterprise specialising in providing a unique programme of interactive learning to help people start their own business, and is open to Wokingham Borough residents aged 18 and over. There will be a taster session on Thursday May 18 and the sessions will begin on Thursday May 25 at Wokingham Library.

Andy Nicholls, Wokingham Borough Council’s economic development officer, said: “This programme is about helping people to help themselves. The council believes in helping people fulfil their potential and this project releases previously hidden talent.”

Sonya Thomas, a graduate from a previous programme who has set up her own interior design company Larkspur Interiors, said: “It was a really fantastic course. Paul and Richard who ran the course were incredibly supportive and gave us really practical advice and information which was both easy to understand and useful.”

Anyone interested in taking part in the course will need to complete an application form. This must be returned by Monday May 15 or in person at the taster session.
