Wokingham GCSE 2019 Results
Students across the Wokingham Borough shone on GCSE results day, as they performed well above the national average in English and maths despite sitting new, tougher exams.
More than 1,700 young people collected results across the borough, with 81.8 per cent passing English with a grade 4 or higher compared to the national average of 61.8 per cent (*).
Maths
The maths grades were equally impressive with 78.7 per cent of students achieving the benchmark grade 4 or higher, compared to 59.6 per cent (*) nationally. An impressive 74.4 per cent of pupils achieved a grade 4 or higher in both English and maths.
Teachers were on hand at schools across Wokingham Borough to congratulate the teenagers or lend a hand if they needed guidance on a different educational or career pathway.
New Grading System
The results come in the second year of the new tougher grading system for GCSEs. This is the second year where A-G grades have been scrapped and replaced with 9 to 1, with the higher number representing the top scores. Achieving a grade 4 and above in the new system is the equivalent of a C grade pass in the old lettered system.
“I can only applaud GCSE students across Wokingham borough for another set of stellar results,” said Cllr UllaKarin Clark, executive member for children’s services. “Following on from the success of our A-level students last week, our GCSE students showed Wokingham Borough’s young people continue stand above the national average in exam performance.
“These fantastic results show the culmination of the dedication and determination by these students, supported by their parents and teaching staff across the borough. Teachers have guided our young people through the exams period and done their utmost to ensure they were ready to sit these challenging exams.
“Sitting any exam is always a stressful experience and I would like to thank all the staff in our schools, teachers and beyond, for helping these students perform at their best. Our teachers should be proud of what they have helped these young people achieve.”
