Wokingham Road Resurfacing This Winter 2021
Wokingham Borough Council’s second phase of resurfacing has now been completed. Nine key transport routes across the area have seen worked completed with more than £500,000 invested this autumn.
This phase is part of the council’s £8million investment in road improvements during 2020-21 and follows an extensive programme earlier this year. The council is currently finalising the next phase of resurfacing in the borough, starting in the New Year with £1.7million being allocated for works until the end of March.
2020 Winter Completed
Many of the roads completed this autumn are some of the most well-used in the borough, including Longwater Road in Finchampstead and Davis Street in Hurst, as well as Crockhamwell Road and Headley Road in Woodley.
All the roads received an extensive full resurfacing treatment which involved removing the top layers of the worn out road surface and replacing this with new material. More information on the different types of road treatments can be found on the council’s website.
“Keeping road surfaces up to scratch is important for our residents, especially in the winter months when it can be icy,” said Cllr Pauline Jorgensen, executive member for highways and transport. “We continue to invest in our road network on routes which are most used to ensure the work benefits as many residents as possible. More than 100 roads have been improved since April, with more to come in the New Year, so keep your eyes peeled for where we’ll be working.”
2021 Roads
Works planned for Rushey Way in Earley, Nine Mile Ride in Finchampstead, and Basingstoke Road in Swallowfield, will be in early in January. In the New Year we’ll be announcing our third phase of resurfacing for the 2020-21 financial year. These roads will be a part of and mean more than 120 streets across the area have been improved as part of our programme.
Almost 100 roads across the area were resurfaced earlier this year, with many of the most disruptive locations being completed during the lockdown months when roads were quieter. Almost half of this phase of the programme took place during the second Covid-19 lockdown, allowing reduced disruption to motorists during the work.
Roads have been selected by the council’s highways team by identifying the roads most in need of attention thanks to continual surveying and inspection producing a condition scoring system.
Wokingham Road Resurfacing Programme
The work is part of a series of highway investments in Wokingham Borough including the council’s £124million major highways programme, new or improved park and ride car parks, and other services across the area. This includes the newly opened Observer Way (Arborfield Cross Relief Road).
The council is also beginning its work to invest £20million in tackling congestion over the next five years.
