Young readers are invited to solve a library mystery in the 2017 summer reading challenge, assisted by a bunch of furry, slippery and four-legged animal agents.
To take part in the annual national challenge, which this year runs from 1 July to 3 September, children simply join for free at their nearest library. When they start borrowing and reading their books, they receive a special collector’s folder. As they read at least six books during the challenge, they collect six smelly stickers to help solve the library mystery.
The main challenge is for children aged four to eleven, but there is also Little Explorers version for children aged four and under. Teenagers can join the fun with the teen read challenge.
Wokingham Library
Other events have been planned at Wokingham libraries during the summer to celebrate the reading challenge. These include an animal agent treasure hunt with prizes, and a 500 word poetry and short story competition for children and young people on the theme of freedom.
“We’re encouraging all of the borough’s schoolchildren to take part in this year’s challenge. Our libraries are full of wonderful books for them to enjoy,” said Cllr Norman Jorgensen, executive member for environment, sports, environmental health, leisure and libraries.
“We’ve some fantastic events to complement the animal agents theme such as author visits, animal handling sessions with rainforest creatures and birds of prey, craft activities plus lots more. This is a really worthwhile challenge that helps to nurture a love of reading.”
Last year more than 2,500 children started and nearly 1,600 completed the summer reading challenge in Wokingham Borough libraries.
